The delimitation of wards and zones in Chennai and nearby local bodies would be completed in the coming days to facilitate expanding the Chennai Corporation limits from the present 174 sq km to 426 sq km, according to report from the Local administration.
As per the Government order the Chennai City limits will be extended up to Uthandi on East Coast Road, Sholinganallur on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, Kathivakkam and Madhavaram in the north and up to Meenambakkam in the south. The administration set a time frame to complete the delimitation works by August 2011 (two months before the scheduled local body elections in October 2011).
For creation of a larger urban agglomeration on the foot steps of Greater Bangalore and Greater Hyderabad the Government has ordered merger of nine municipalities, eight Town Panchayats and 25 village panchayats with present Chennai limits.
